Ardha Uttanasana . “Ardha” means half, and tog

Ardha Uttanasana
.
“Ardha” means half, and together with uttanasana, this pose is called half intense stretching pose, or half standing forward fold. This pose goes hand-in-hand with uttanasana, and forms part of the Surya Namaskara sequence.
.
This pose is said to restore and rejuvenate the body, calming the brain, as well as reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
.
This pose also packs a chakra punch! It stimulates ajna, the third eye chakra, improving mental function and intuition, and opens the heart. Ardha Uttanasana also engages manipura, the navel chakra, which can bring the practitioner increased confidence and willpower.
.

Uttanasana
.
Uttanasana comes from the Sanskrit “ut,” meaning intense, powerful, and deliberate, and “tan,” meaning to stretch, extend, and lengthen. This pose is a stretch of the entire back body, from the soles of the feet and up the backs of the legs, spanning the lower, middle, and upper back, rising up the neck, and circling over the scalp and back down the forehead, finally ending at the point between the eyebrows. Focus should be on hingeing from your hip joints rather than reaching for your toes.

Besides offering a full stretch, this pose can also alleviate anxiety, relieve headaches, improve digestion, and quiet the mind.
.
Yoga is not about touching your toes ! It’s about unlocking your ideas about what you want, where you think you can go, and what you will achieve when you get there. In uttanasana (and in life!), knowing when to accept intensity and when to be content with where you are is the key to steady progress without injury or frustration. It is a posture of surrender and, as such, may teach one patience and acceptance.

It’s easy to try to push for more - in uttanasana this means wanting to be more flexible or pushing into the pose. Rather than struggling, use the posture to practice santosha (contentment). Can you accept both the intensity and your capacity right now?
